Bio




Owen is a twenty year-old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, ukulele, piano, melodica and percussion) who has been performing since he was nine years old. In addition to playing solo, Owen fronts the indie band The Onlys, a horn-driven trio that explores pop, jazz and funk. Owen is also one half of the new-grass duo Owen and Sam as well as the jazz combo Emily and the Big Sound. He also performs original acoustic blues and eclectic pop with his father Robert Nied, a veteran of the 1960's Greenwich Village folk scene, as The Nieds.
 
Owen’s original music ranges from edgy pop to jazz to blues, rock and hip hop and is influenced by artists as diverse as Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jack White, Jeff Beck, Brian Wilson, B.B. King, Dick Dale, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Tony Bennett, Kendrick Lamar, Dave Brubeck, Chet Atkins, Van Morrison and Ella Fitzgerald.

Always comfortable performing, Owen has played a wide variety of venues including live radio. Owen began his music career as a featured performer at the 2011 and 2012 Ukulele Festival of Great Britain, having been awarded an initial performance slot by winning a YouTube video competition. At the age of sixteen Owen completed a tour of clubs in Paris, France and Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, becoming the youngest musician ever to headline the storied Taos Inn.

Owen has also composed original music for modern dance companies including for the 2015 and 2016 seasons of AirDance New Mexico, in
Albuquerque. In 2017 he was commissioned to write the original music for an independent animated film.  Owen also works as a session player providing lead guitar, piano and harmony vocals for other recording artists. He has released multiple EPs as a solo artist and will be releasing a new LP as the lead singer and guitarist for The Onlys in the fall of 2018.

Owen was selected as a poetry participant in the New England Young Writers Conference and received a merit scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music's prestigious summer jazz program, where he received honors. He has also been selected for a brief summer 2018 residency at the Vermont Jazz Center.

The recipient of an artistic achievement scholarship, Owen is a third year student at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA where he is studying music, writing and film. In the fall of 2018 he will be an exchaneg student at Goldsmiths-University of London.
 
Future projects include a winter 2018 solo tour, a new solo album, collaboration with other musicians, freelance recording session work and the production of a documentary film on the history of French "Ye Ye" music of the early 1960's.
